Obituary for George J Dawson

George J. Dawson, age 71, of Wilmington passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018.

George was a safety manager and retired from the Methodist Country House after many years. He was a US Army veteran, serving in the Panama Canal Zone from 1966-1968 where he was awarded the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals. George was a member of Peniel United Methodist Church. He was a very active member of Minquas Fire Department since 1962, where he served on the Board of Directors, Assistant Chief for many years rising to Deputy Chief before retiring from active firefighter duties. George was also a long-time member of the Delaware State Fire Chief Association and the New Castle County Chiefs Association.
George and his wife Gail ran a small catering business. George loved to cook for his family and firehouse buddies. He was a very good baseball player and played for Krebs and Conrad Varsity in his past. George enjoyed crossword puzzles, fishing and his time spent at the beach and at the fire department.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Gail in 2014 and his brother, Glenn W. Dawson, Jr. in 2007. Survivors include his step-son, Darryl Johnson; his sisters-in-law, Gail A. Dawson and Sherry Riale (Wayne); 6 nephews; 11 great-nieces and nephews and his beloved "grandcat", Smokey.

Funeral Services with Firemans Honors will be at 7 PM on Friday, August 10 at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis Street, Newport, DE 19804 where visitation will begin at 6 PM. Burial with military honors will be 2 PM on Tuesday, August 14 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
