John McCormick departed this world on March 11, 2026, surrounded by his family.
He was born in 1947 and raised in upstate New York where he graduated from Maine-Endwell High School. There he played football and was involved in numerous school activities including student government. Upon graduation he attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he met the love of his life. They got married in 1967 and set about creating a life together and celebrated the birth of their daughter in 1969. In the early 1970s he began programming accounting machines. Little did he know at the time that this would be the first step to a very successful career as a computer programmer. Throughout the 1970s he continued to perfect his craft to the point where he started his own business in 1976, the same year the couple would welcome their second child, a son, into the world.
In the late 1970s their daughter found her lifelong passion for horses, and this became a passion for John as well. This passion led him to countless horse shows and hours of trail riding over the next 40 years. In the 1990s he developed a love for Phillies baseball, attending dozens of games and watching them almost every night when he couldn’t be there in person. In 1998 he became a grandfather and loved his grandsons with all of his heart. He looked forward to attending their games and cheering them on from the stands.
In the 2010s he retired but still wanted to give back to the community that had treated him so well for so long. He volunteered with the New Castle County Police as a member of their Senior Roll Call program to help ensure the safety of the elderly who live alone. In addition, he volunteered with AARP to help prepare taxes for senior citizens, many of whom would not have been able to afford professional tax preparation services.
Throughout his life he left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Connie, his daughter Colleen Daniels and her husband Tad of Bear, his son Jay and his fiancé Lauren Reffay of Newark, his grandsons Joshua Daniels of Bear and Zackery Daniels and his wife Emilee of Duff, Tennessee.
Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made in his name to the Delaware City Fire Company or the Guiding Eyes for the Blind to train dogs for those who suffer from significant vision impairment.
