James B. Latney Sr. of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at home on August 25, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He will be remembered for his strength, wisdom, and devotion to those he loved most.
Born January 22, 1950, in Philadelphia, PA, to Blanche E. Simpers (nee. Latney) and Delbert L. Simpers Sr., James graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in 1968. He went on to build a respected career as a chemist at DuPont before retiring, and later pursued entrepreneurship as the owner of Algae Eaters.
James found joy in simple pleasures—caring for his fish tanks, flying kites, and collecting cigar boxes—but nothing compared to the time he spent with family. He and his beloved wife, Jean, shared a life full of love, raising children & grandchildren, traveling, and taking long drives together. James never missed an important milestone, always capturing the moment and celebrating those he cherished the most.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Jean; his son, James Jr.; his siblings, Wayne Latney, James Lewis, Clifton Lewis, and Violet Pettijohn; his godson, John Harris; and his former spouse, Carol E. (Smith) Latney.
He is survived by his children Cherae, Brande, Marquita (Mike) Sellman, Jawann (Morgan) Latney, and Ebony Latney; grandchildren Ashle (Vernae), Harlan (Melissa), Quierra, Deja, Adrian, Jourdann, Michael, and Madison; and great-grandchildren Trevon, Sephira, and Harlan “Q.” He also leaves behind siblings Arlene (Benard) Bruce, Alice (Ronald) Reid, and Delbert (Rachel) Simpers Jr., along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of James’ life will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Catalyst Community Church, 410 Denver Rd., Wilmington, DE 19804. Viewing will be from 9:30 to 11:00 AM, followed by the service at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
