It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of George H. Kirkland Jr., a man who was truly dedicated to his faith and family. George was born on December 16, 1948, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and passed peacefully on August 20, 2026, at Christiana Care Hospice Unit. Through his journey of 77 years, he touched many lives with his wisdom, humor, and generosity.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, reading, and a good game of pinochle or horseshoes...always with family and always with a cup of coffee nearby. He also loved traveling, shopping, and having deep meaningful conversations that left an impression on people around him. George knew everyone and everyone knew George. He was a good speaker, a good worker, always keeping his hands busy and never afraid to tackle any job.
He dedicated his life to serving God, having planted and grown multiple congregations, and most recently serving as elder of Greenback Church of Christ. He found joy in teaching people the Bible and spending time with church family; he brought many to know and grow in God's love. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
George was proceeded in death by his parents, George H. Kirkland Sr. and Bernice (Fleeger) Kirkland, his brother, Albert Kirkland, and his eldest son, George (Fred) Kirkland. He is survived by his wife, Sherry Lelah (Uiselt) Kirkland, sons Jeff Kirkland, and wife Jamie, Sam Kirkland, and wife Jennifer, and Scott Kirkland, and wife Emily, and nine grandchildren (Tyler, Victoria, Emma, Karma, Nate, Seth, Amelia, Lucas, and Kennedy).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 5th at 10:00 AM at Greenbank Church of Christ, 511 Greenback Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. We invite everyone who knew and loved George to join us in honoring his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Greenbank Church of Christ, 511 Greenbank Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
