Charles Cogbill

Charles Cogbill passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, at the age of 78. He was known for his deep love of science fiction and terribly unfunny puns.

Those who knew Charles well understood that his gruff exterior concealed a deeply loyal man who loved his family fiercely. He served in the U.S. Navy for many years, including during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Hortensia; his daughters, Elisa and Sally; and his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his intelligence, complexity, and his unusually strong opinions on nearly everything.

A memorial service will be held at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home (212 E Justis St, Newport, DE) on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m., with the service to follow at 11:00 a.m.

In keeping with his wishes, Charles will be cremated, and his ashes will remain with his family. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor his memory by rereading a beloved book or donating to United Through Reading, a nonprofit that helps service members stay connected to their children through shared storytime—even from afar.
