Obituary for Steven John Schwee
Steven John Schwee, age 56, formerly of Colesville, MD, died Sunday, August 20, 2023 in Wilmington, DE after a long illness.
Steve was born on December 28, 1966 in Silver Spring, MD to Leonard Joseph and Carol Anne (Miller) Schwee. Steve lived his rambunctious early years in Colesville, MD with his two brothers Jimmy and Mickey. A particularly close set of neighborhood friends were always available to play, ride bikes, and build tree forts. The family backyard was the neighborhood football field and Steve never shied away from playing with the big kids. It was no surprise when he became a standout player and the captain of his high school football team. After Steve graduated from Paint Branch High School in 1985, he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in education from Johns Hopkins University. Steve was a special education teacher, football coach, and personal trainer. He had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was definitely the one you wanted with you when the going got tough. Steve’s passion for football led him back to his high school alma mater as an assistant coach. When a player was struck by lightning at the beginning of a practice, Steve jumped in with two others to provide life-saving CPR. The Maryland General Assembly recognized Steve’s action as being heroic. For fun, Steve enjoyed sailing his catamaran on Lake Linganore and the Chesapeake Bay. He was always fearless when taking on ambitious home improvement projects.
Steve’s greatest joy was taking care of his daughters, Carli and Rylee. They were the light of his life, and he was unendingly proud of them. His joy of family extended to all his relatives including his nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. He never hesitated to let people know that he loved them.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Anne Schwee.
Steve is survived by his daughters, Carli (Ricky Dubbin) Schwee of Frederick, MD and Rylee Schwee of San Francisco, CA; the mother of his children, Leslie Reicher Cardenas of Frederick, MD; his brothers, James (Laura) Schwee of Ashburn, VA and Michael Schwee of Oviedo, FL; his aunt Rita Green of Des Moines, IA; uncle Daniel (Janise) Schwee of Omaha, NE; his nephews Matthew (Kari) Schwee of Ashburn, VA, Stephen (Amalia) Schwee of Chicago, IL, and Andrew Schwee of Tampa, FL; his niece Suzanne (Ben) Ward of Hollywood, FL; his grandnephews, Carter and Tanner; and his grandnieces, Hayden and Serena.
Steve will be forever loved, forever missed, and forever in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held with family and friends in Northern Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Steve's favorite causes, Best Buddies International and Special Olympics.
