Obituary for Russell John Hughes

Russell Hughes, 66 died peacefully at home on June 18, 2021. Born August 15, 1954 in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, He moved to Delaware when he was a year old. He spent his childhood in Newark where he attended Holy Angels Primary School and graduated from Christiana High School in 1973.

In 1993 he married Joan Cordrey. They moved to Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania where they purchased the family home of Russell's Grandparents. They had one daughter, Margaret Eleanor. He was a devoted father to Margaret and she was his whole world. Joan, lovingly known as Joanie, was devoted to taking care of Russell even after their divorce. She cooked him meals, managed his finances and kept in touch by talking to him every day. Joanie and her husband Don often spent time with Russell. Their selflessness will be appreciated by Russell’s family forever.

Russell was a unique, extremely generous, and wild man who instigated many adventures with his many friends. He loved his Rock and Roll music, and took every opportunity to enjoy it. He loved his cigars and enjoyed his beer. His home was his castle. He always made a profound impression on everyone he encountered.

He is preceded in death by his daughter Margaret Eleanor, 15, His brother David, and his Father Tom.

Surviving are his mother Eleanor Hughes (Reilly), his brother Tom, His twin brother Richard and his children, Allison, Erin, Jordan, and Emma. His brother Kenny (wife Star), his Sister Mary Ellen Barratt and her children, Reilly, Emily (fiancé Jason) and Logan and his great nieces and nephew Jason, Nina, and Alice.

The family would like to thank the friends and neighbors, particularly Dee Dobranski and Joe DiRisio, that helped Russell so much in his later years.

Funeral Services will be at 2:30 pm on Friday, June 25 at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis St. Newport, DE 19804 where visitation will begin at 1:30 pm.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Ministry of Caring, 115 E. 14th St. Wilmington, DE 19801 or St. Vincent dePaul Kitchen, 39 E. Jackson St. Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
