Obituary for Robert George Mentzer

Robert George Mentzer, age 86, died January 15, 2022 at his daughter's home in Newark, Delaware.

Bob was born in Toledo, Ohio on April 6, 1935 to George W. Mentzer and Vida L. Aufderheide. He graduated from Libbey High School and Toledo University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. After graduating he worked at the Libbey-Owens-Ford glass company, then earned a doctorate in organic chemistry from Ohio State University.

He married Nancy Jean Harmon in Toledo in 1959 and they soon moved to Wilmington, Delaware when he took a job with DuPont as a chemist. After a decade with DuPont, in 1971 he followed his true passion and began a second career as a physics and chemistry teacher at William Penn High School in New Castle.

He retired from teaching in 1998 and traveled extensively with Nancy, seeing Europe and the UK and visiting friends and family across the US.

He was a member of the Delaware Astronomical Society for over twenty years and its treasurer for ten. He also published articles on the Mason-Dixon line survey technology.

He is survived by his sons David (Celine) of Wilmington, and Stephen of Pittsburgh, his daughter Karen Muirhead (Glenn) of Newark, and his grandchildren Christina and Erik.

He is predeceased by his sisters in Ohio, Laura Ramsdell, Virginia Konz, and Kathryn Bruner.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 11 AM with visitation at 10:30 AM at Emmanuel Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 1006 Wilson Road, Wilmington DE 19803.
