Ramon J. Cabrera Jr., lovingly known as Ray, age 79, passed away on Sunday, August 2nd, 2020.

Born in Summit NJ, he was the son of the late Janet (nėe Preble) and Ramon J Cabrera. He was a graduate of Cheshire Academy in 1960. He was an Army veteran. He owned Brown’s Hardware in Summit, New Jersey. He was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark, Delaware.

In his leisure time, Ray enjoyed homebrewing wines as the Village of Fox Meadow Winery. Ray enjoyed playing pool, horseshoes, boating, and anything involving the water. He was an avid NY Giants fan. He enjoyed playing music in a band with his friends, where he played banjo and bass. He also enjoyed making pentatonic wind chimes. He particularly enjoyed grilling, and his first option was always steak. In retirement, he enjoyed cooking, making delicious cookies, scratch pizza, and many breads and baked goods. He and his wife enjoyed season tickets at the REP theatre for many years. He was fond of calling himself “jeepster mon” and enjoyed a variety of bumper stickers on his cars, his favorites being “I may be old, but I got to hear all the good bands” and “EADG rocks- just trying to stay out of treble.”

Ray and his wife Pat enjoyed traveling both nationally and internationally. Favorite memories from their travels in Europe include: Italy, France, and river boat tours of the Netherlands and Germany. They enjoyed the Caribbean as well, especially their trip to Costa Rica. Their most memorable trip was their first trip together, where they went bareboat chartering in the British Virgin Islands for two weeks. There, they went island hopping, snorkeling, and dancing at Foxy’s. Closer to home, they visited the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park, Monument Park and other features in the Midwest.

In the last few months, Ray particularly appreciated Lori’s Hands, students from the University of Delaware who would help do things around the house, and would call during the Coronavirus. He furthermore enjoyed keeping in touch with his pen pals from Lori’s Hands. It meant a great deal to him.

He is survived by his wife of twenty five years, Patricia Drake; his children, Maggie Hudgins (Theron), R.J. Cabrera, III, and Elizabeth Alexander (Richard); his grandchildren, Annabel and Russell Hudgins, Katherine Mulrooney (Dave), Allison Alexander, David Alexander, and Rebecca Alexander; and his sisters, Cece Pattison and M.J. Shaw.

Due to coronavirus, funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ray's memory may be made to Lori's Hands Delaware, 100 Discovery Blvd, 4th Floor, Newark, DE 19713
