Obituary for Patricia Howell

Patricia “Pat” Howell, age 91, of Newark, went to be with the Lord very peacefully on Saturday, December 16, 2023.

Pat was born in Wilmington to the late Stephen and Agnes (Pankowski) Lyons and attended Wilmington High School. She worked for 5 years at DuPont in the Employee Relations Dept. and later in life worked for the University of Delaware.

At the young age of 13, at a neighborhood dance, she met her soulmate, and in October of that year, he asked her to go steady. The next day, Sunday, he met her with her parents to walk to church, as they did for the rest of their 63 years together.

Pat was a member of St. John-Holy Angels Catholic Parish, where she served as Eucharistic Minister and was very active, including the 8am mass coffee group, the widow and widower group, and earlier, the school library. She also was a member of her neighborhood prayer group. Along with her husband, Bill, Pat enjoyed volunteering at Hope Dining Room, Wheels of New Castle County Senior Services, the bread ministry, and, when their kids attended Holy Angels, the church carnivals. When they lived in Texas, both Pat and Bill were active in Scouts, in their parish, and other activities of their 6 kids.

An avid walker, Pat also loved gardening, reading, travelling, and looked forward to daily crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and her favorite, the cryptic byword. She was a fervent (home) ‘Jeopardy’ contestant!

Pat was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William T. “Bill” Howell, Sr. in 2009.

Survivors include their children, William, Jr. (Barbara), Thomas (Marie), Robert (Deborah), Sheila Oscar (Tom), Linda Shopa (Tom), and Kathleen Young (John); 26 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, with 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild on the way. An only child, Pat felt blessed and delighted with her large and terrific family.

Services will be at St. John-Holy Angels Catholic Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711, on Wednesday, December 27, 2023. Visitation will be from 9am-10:45am, with Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11am. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
