Obituary for Norma L. Selland Derby

Norma L. Selland Derby (95) of Willow Valley Retirement Center, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania and formerly of Ankeny, Iowa died on Friday, March 22, 2019.

Norma was an elementary school teacher at Woodside School in Des Moines, Iowa. She taught as an adjunct at Drake University and Des Moines area Community College until 2006, working with Citizenship, English as a second language, and GED certification. Norma also assisted with Saturday kid’s clubs at Michaels Crafts. She was a recent member of West Willow UMC and formerly of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny, Iowa, since 1961. She taught Sunday School, led Women’s Bible Study Group and served on Church Council. She enjoyed making miniature room dioramas from 1971 to 1998 and traveling with the Wally Byam Club in the family Air Stream motorhome.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James Carlton Selland, in 2003; her husband, Carl Derby, Jr in 2016, two sisters, Patty Horn of Olath, Kansas; Bert Grazier of Des Moines, Iowa; a grandson, Nathan Selland , granddaughters Denise Wilkins and Kelly Wilkins, and daughter-in-law Vera Selland of Loveland, Colorado.

Surviving her are her children, Christy Wilkins of Des Moines, Iowa; Terry Selland of Loveland, Colorado; Jayme Rothweiler (Rev. Don) of Ankeny, Iowa; brothers Tom (Donna) and Jerry (Virginia) Cole of Des Moines, Iowa; and sister, Sharon Reed (Larry) of Ankeny, Iowa; 2 grandchildren, Erika Eckley (Tim) of Carlise, Iowa, and Joel Wilkins of Fort Worth, Texas; and 2 great grandchildren, Ian Wilkins and Zachary Wilkins, both of Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny, Iowa at 10:30am on Saturday, April 6.
