Obituary for Eleanor Hughes

Eleanor Hughes, age 94, of Newark, passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

Eleanor “Ely” Hughes of Newark, Delaware, Born February 28, 1927 in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, died peacefully at home on June 30, 2021 in the presence of her loving family.

She spent her childhood in Wilkes Barre where she graduated from Coughlin High School in 1945. During World War II she was part of the war effort and helped transcribe Japanese messages. Ely was an avid dancer who frequented Harvey’s Lake to dance where she met her Husband Thomas Hughes. They dated for 4 months and got engaged. On September 15, 1949 they were married and soon started their family. In Wilkes Barre they had 2 boys, Tommy and David and a set of twins, Richard and Russell. She and her husband Thomas Hughes and her four boys moved to Delaware in 1955 where they had their daughter Mary in 1961 and adopted their son Ken Murphy.

Ely was a member of Holy Family Church and was very active at Holy Angels Church when her children attended there. She was also a Den Mother for her son’s Cub Scouts Troop. Ely was a wonderful mother, grandma and GG who welcomed anyone into her home.

Ely was a brave, beautiful, loving, and generous woman. She dealt with her hardships with a smile. An avid reader and armchair Intellectual her thirst for knowledge was only matched by her gusto and sharing it with her grand children, children and all others that Knew her. A smile rarely far from her face, she was often a light in the lives of those she loved offering guidance and compassion in equal measure.

Ely was preceded in death by her parents, John and Eleanor Reilly, her siblings, Mary Ellen, Edward, Johnny and Claire, husband of over 40 years, Thomas Hughes; sons, Russell and David Hughes; granddaughter, Margaret Hughes; and her best friends, Helen and Claire.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas Hughes (Catherine), Richard Hughes and Ken Murphy (Star); daughter, Mary Ellen Baratt; brothers, Jerry Reilly and Ricky Reilly; grandchildren Michael (Andrea), Jessica (Justin) and Laura, Heather (Glen) and Little Kenny (Debbie), Allison, Erin, Jordan, and Emma (Christian), Reilly, Emily (Jay), and Logan; many great grandchildren and her daughters in law, Sarah Hughes and Joan Heilbron.


Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 am on Monday, July 5 at HOLY FAMILY CHURCH, 15 Gender Rd, Newark, DE 19713 where visitation will begin at 10 am. Burial will be 11 am on Tuesday, July 6 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
