Obituary for Margaret Ann Garrett

Margaret Ann Garrett transitioned from this life peacefully following an extended illness, on Thursday January 20, 2022 at Gilpin Hall in Wilmington, Delaware. Margaret was born on April 24, 1937 in Campbell County, Virginia to the late Sallie Pannell and Pleas Allen Lewis. Margaret (Aunt Margaret) was 84 years of age.

Margaret met and married her loving and devoted husband, Odell Matthew Garrett, for 53 years before his passing. They were never blessed with children of their own, but together helped raise and take care of several generations of nieces, nephews and anyone in need of loving care. The couple relocated from Leesville, VA to Penns Grove, NJ and then to Manlove Manor in Wilmington, DE.

Margaret was a devoted wife, homemaker and caregiver to all of her family and anyone in need; she would be found caring for her home, her husband, family members and neighborhood children in her spare time.

Margaret was a faithful and avid church member. She was known as Mother Garrett to her church family, New Galilee Baptist Church, presiding Pastor Bishop William B. Wilmore, Jr. Mother Margaret Garrett served as a member of the Mother’s Board, Sunday School Superintendent, and spent over 37 years serving the Sunday School Ministry as Teacher and Secretary. She was also a member of the Seasoned Saints, Church Choir and served as Chaplain of the Choir. Her favorite songs to sing were “All of my help comes from the Lord” and “What a Friend we have in Jesus”. Her favorite scriptures: Psalms 23 and I Corinthians 15:51-58.

Sadly on August 24, 2011, Mother Garrett became ill during one of the morning services at New Galilee Baptist Church which rendered her physically unable to attend church services at her beloved home church and ultimately resulted in her being moved into a long-term care facility.

Margaret was preceded in death by her sister Sallie (Polly) Bell Via, two brothers Samuel (Bo-Diddley) Lewis and Charles Lewis. She is survived by remaining siblings Alice Rhoades Victoria, VA, Rachel Rosser of Lynchburg, VA, brothers John Lewis of Lynchburg, VA, William Allen, and Paul Lewis all of Roanoke, VIrginia. She is also survived by her sister in laws: Vonnie Moon, Margaret Moon (Leesville, VA), Betty Saunders (Bedford, VA) and a dedicated sister in law Mary Garrett-Taylor, her niece/caregiver Patricia Purnell, a host of dedicated nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.

She was loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Graveside Services will be held at 10 am on Friday, March 4 at Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE 19805
