Obituary for Jorge L. Cruz

Jorge Luis Cruz Sr. (Also know as Papó, Jay or JC) passed away on June 30th, 2023 at the age of 67 in his apartment in Middletown, DE. Jorge died unexpectedly, and is relieved from the pains of several different conditions he was battling. Despite his pain, he tried to live his life joyously and was always singing "don't worry, be happy."

Jorge was born in New York, NY. He spent his youth between Manhattan, NY and Dominican Republic. Through the course of his life he became a Jack of all Trades. He could play many musical instruments, he was an artist and an avid reader. He loved comic books and movies and playing hand ball in New York. He loved meeting with new people and talking. His knowledge was extensive. He humbly knew he could do anything, he even was a bit of a comedian - infusing his complicated life with as much laughter as possible. He used his talents and gifts to help others and enjoyed spending time getting to know people and about their lives. He loved nature. Throughout his entire life you could always count on him to want to go fishing and going home sun burned from being outside.

His departure is preceded by his father Belarminio Cruz and his mother Luisa Sánchez Rodriguez.

Jorge L. Cruz Sr. is survived by his former wife Teresa Arroyo Alicea and their four children; Jorge L Cruz Jr., Melissa K. Cruz, Gabriel A. Cruz, and Ellenie M. Cruz-Hampton. To his children he was known as Doddy.

In his last years on earth he ended his conversations reminding us to "Be good. Be safe. Be happy."

His private memorial will be held July 7, 2023 in Battery park, New Castle, DE.

A note from Jorge's son, Gabriel:
"Father was a good man like many, who had a past life like many. Born in the tough streets of New York City, dad's life was never normal. Beginning with how we called him, "Doddy", he enjoyed fishing like there was no tomorrow. He'd enjoy comic books and movies, especially the Punisher. He loved meeting with new people and talking. But the most fascinating thing, was how good he was in hand-ball when he lived in New York City. A prized sport in New York, he played among some of the fiercest competition. Then, to team with him in billiards was truly something I cherished with him. With that said, he always had a good time no matter where he was. But, darn was he good at handling tools when he was a master electrician/carpenter. His knowledge was so extensive, he helped so many people in the community. Many of the first-times we had with Dad, will end with his children and generations beyond. One thing that was always appreciated from him was, at the end of a good and peaceful conversation, he'd end with, "Be good. Be safe. And be happy." It was like a blessing he'd give before we parted ways back to our lives behind the scenes. Thanks dad for everything, "Be good. Be safe. Be happy."
