Obituary for Herman C Schechinger

Herman C. Schechinger, 87, of Dover Delaware passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2022 after a period of declining health.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Wootten-Schechinger, his children Michael and Katherine Urban of Garnet Valley PA, Ken and Nancy Urban of Chestertown, MD, Anita Hetherington of Wilmington, NC, Kathy Urban of Casa Grande, AZ, Paul and Barbara Schechinger of Londonderry, NH, Theresa Santoro of New Castle, DE, Chris and Angie Schechinger of Overland Park, KS, and John Wootten of Newark, DE, and many grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his parents Albert and Ethel Schechinger, his brother, Richard Schechinger, and his daughter, Lisa Urban.

Herman lived his entire life in Delaware. He worked for the DuPont company for 29 years in a variety of roles, most recently as a Quality Assurance Inspector. After leaving DuPont, he worked as fine finish carpenter for PHB Inc. in Middletown, where he used his skills as a cabinetmaker, for which he apprenticed in his youth. He was very skilled with his hands, and throughout his life did several extensive remodeling projects and furniture building and refinishing for his family and friends. There wasn’t anything Herm couldn’t fix, whether in the home or especially the garage. He could talk about cars with anyone and did everything from oil changes to full engine rebuilds in his driveway.

Herman was an avid toy train collector and had a substantial collection of pre-war Lionel standard and O gauge trains. An article was written about Herm and his train collection in Delaware Beach Life magazine about 15 years ago.

Herman and Kay enjoyed singing in the church Choir at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes, and at the Delaware Saengerbund Association in Newark. He was an Oddfellow at Eden Lodge of Wilmington for over 50 years.

There will be a service to celebrate Herman’s life on Friday, January 21 at 11:00 o’clock at Nichols Gilmore Funeral Home 212 E. Justis St. Newport DE where visitation will begin at 10 o'clock. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
