Obituary for Harold E Follett

Harold E. Follett passed away on October 15, 2023. He was born in Ithaca, New York in 1933 to the late Harold Wesley and Anna Ruth (Slocum) Follett.

The family moved to Wilmington, Delaware, for a few years; later duPont transferred his father (and family) to Terre Haute, Indiana, to Penn Yan, New York and finally they resettled in Wilmington, Delaware during World War II. Harold graduated from Henry C. Conrad High School - in his senior year he built a 14’ outboard boat assembling some parts in Conrad’s wood shop and most at his home workshop. He also built his own wooden water skis so the family could use the boat and skis in the summers on the Chesapeake Bay. Harold pitched for Conrad baseball team and the Junior American Legion State Champions Baseball Team.

He graduated from Millersville State Teachers College (now Millersville University of Pennsylvania) with a major in Industrial Arts. Harold served as president of the college’s Rod & Gun Club, during his senior year. He served for 6 years in the Delaware Air National Guard during the Korean War as an airplane mechanic. He taught Industrial Arts in the Red Clay Consolidated School District; upon retirement he worked full-time on the family 39’ wooden sailboat in the backyard until it was ready to be transported down for completion at a shipyard in Oxford, Md.

He was an inventor and was issued 10 patents. For several years he was the volunteer leader of singles activities for the Peninsula-Delaware Conference of the United Methodist Church. He is a member of the Richardson Park UMC. He attended the Focus Singles, a ministry of the Church of the Saviour, Wayne, PA. He also attended several Christian Singles Conferences for many years including the Billy Graham Center at the Cove.

He is survived by his sister Ruth Ann Follett Terres (Jack), niece Jacqueline Ann Terres Couch (Jonathan) and 3 grandnephews: Jared, Justin and Joshua Couch.

Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Graveside service was held at Gracelawn Memorial Park to be followed by a memorial service in Wayne, PA at a later date.
