G. Clark Shaffer

Wilmington - G. Clark Shaffer, age 94, passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Seasons Hospice.
Clark was born in Bloomsburg, PA where he was raised by his grandparents, George and Bertha Shaffer. He was the son of Clark W. and Sarah Schultz Shaffer.

Clark was a 1945 graduate of Bloomsburg High School where he was a member of the National Athletic Honor Society and also held the top scoring record on his varsity basketball team.

Clark was a proud WWII Veteran. During his senior year of high school he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. After graduating in 1945, he was scheduled for pilot training in Florida, then with the war ending, was transferred to the US Army 5th Air Force in Japan as a member of the Occupation troops. When stationed in Tokyo, he was located next to Gen. MacArthur's HQ where on occasion he was assigned impromptu guard duty as the General exited the Dai-Ichi Building.

After honorable discharge, Clark played American Legion basketball, even playing in a fund-raising event with the Harlem Globetrotters. He was offered a basketball Scholarship to Ohio Wesleyan University and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was then offered both a basketball scholarship and a golf scholarship to Gettysburg College where he graduated with a BA in 1952.

Clark then relocated to Delaware where he had a position with Chrysler Corp, Newark DE as a purchasing agent. With the plant closing, he accepted an offer as Athletic Director and Math instructor at Ferris School for Boys for two years. He then entered the Red Clay Public School System where he accepted several teaching assignments before he retired in 1990.

Clark joined the Cavaliers Country Club in1962 where he remained a member until the club closing. He served as Golf Committee Chairman and was a member of the Board of Directors. until the Club closed. He carried a handicap of 2 for many years and had eleven documented Holes-in-One.

Clark enjoyed DIY projects, birdwatching, his dogs, foreign travels (especially his trip to Russia) and most of all his weekly golf trips with his Band of Golf Brothers.

Clark is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara (Kilfoil); a son, Clark G. Shaffer; daughter in law, Bonnie Shaffer; two granddaughters, Sarah Shaffer and Emily Golder (Chris) and three great grandchildren: Madison Prange, Logan and Wyatt Golder.

A private service at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be held at a later date,
