Obituary for George "Richard" Hobbs

George “Richard” Hobbs, Sr, age 74, of Wilmington, passed away suddenly on Friday, March 8, 2019.

Richard was a 1963 graduate of John Dickinson High School. He started his military career right after high school joining the Marine Corp Reserves. After a few years service there, he then joined the Delaware Army National Guard during which he was activated in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm culminating in 20 years of service to his country. Richard worked as a letter carrier throughout the Wilmington vicinity for 23 years before retiring in 1992. He then continued to work various jobs until fully retiring in 2014. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1601 and the VFW Post 7234. Richard loved most sports and fantasy football. He enjoyed genealogy, watching westerns and was an avid history buff. He dearly loved his family and he adored his wife.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joan C. Hobbs; his children, Kimberly Hobbs-Modesto (John), George R. Hobbs, Jr (Aniko), and Rachel Hobbs Simpson (Marshall); his grandchildren, George III (Amanda), Emily (Michael), Tyler, Matthew (Mary Ellen), Melissa, Alex and Amy; and his brother, Gordon Douglas Hobbs (Martha).

A funeral service will be held at 6 pm on Sunday, March 17 at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis St. Newport, DE 19804 where visitation will begin at 5:30 pm. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard’s memory can be made to St. Judes Hospital for Children, www.stjude.org.
