Obituary for Frederick Earl Edwards Jr

Frederick Earl Edwards Jr, 79, of Milton, DE, passed away on June 07, 2023. He was born on April 08 to Frederick Earl Edwards Sr of Independence, VA and Mildred Godfrey Edwards of Wilmington, DE. He was the fourth of nine children, raised in Newport, DE where he graduated from Conrad High School.

Rick joined the DE Army National Guard in 1963, where he served for six years and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). He studied Industrial Engineering at the Pennsylvania Military College West Chester, PA (now Widener University). Rick worked in the manufacturing industry first for National Vulcanized Fiber in Wilmington, DE and later for Mannington Mills, Inc in Salem, NJ. He raised his family in the rural small town of Alloway, NJ. After his retirement, he and his wife relocated to Southern Delaware to be closer to family and the beaches they loved.

Rick's dedication to his community led him to serve the on the United Way Board of Directors and the YMCA of Salem County. In his retirement he volunteered at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Elsmere, DE and later doing community outreach through St Paul's Episcopal Church in Georgetown, DE.

He enjoyed tennis, skiing, motorcycles, travel, the beach, hosting family crab feasts and most recently being the world's greatest grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol Harrington Edwards, his two children Heather (Gary) Edwards of Fairfax, VA and Ryan (Nicole) Edwards of Centreville, VA, his three wonderful grandchildren Garrison, Colson and Emerson, as well as siblings Carolyn Halfen, David Edwards, William Edwards, Denise Hall and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sisters Doris Woolsey, Virginia Defibaugh, Kathleen Edwards and brother Kenneth Edwards.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 17 at St James Episcopal Church, 2 South Augustine St Newport, DE where visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
