Obituary for Doris A. Gordon

Doris Ann (Appeld) Gordon of Newark, DE was born December 28, 1936 and passed away January 1, 2024. She was 87.

Doris was predeceased by her husband, Charles (Chuck) Wesley Gordon Sr., her parents, Freda (Nehring) Appeld and Rudolph Appeld, and her siblings, Freda (Appeld) Fournier, Emily (Appeld) Gifford, Rudolph Appeld and Linda Appeld. She is survived by her six children, Charles Wesley Gordon Jr. (Pat), Andrew Gordon (Randi), Theresa (Gordon) Assante (Anthony), Keren (Gordon) Cinzio (Ken), Ruth Gordon, and Debra Gordon (Tara); seventeen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.

As a child, Doris spent her summers climbing trees with her siblings and playing in the creek behind her house. She was a 1954 graduate of Park Ridge High School in Park Ridge, NJ. Doris married the love of her life in 1954. Their marriage lasted over 61 years. While her kids were growing up, Doris supported them and her husband, Chuck, with the Valley Grenadiers Drum and Bugle Corps, from Hillsdale, NJ, filling many roles such as seamstress, cook, quarter mistress, treasurer and score tabulator. As a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church of Westwood, NJ, Doris and her family filled the pew every Sunday. This is where she was baptized, confirmed and married … and had all six of her children baptized as well. She enjoyed volunteering at church dinners and participated in the Ladies’ Guild. Doris was a paralegal receptionist at Randall, Randall, and Maguire of Westwood, NJ and a clerk at the Pascack Valley High School Library. She was a 20-year resident of Winslow Twsp., and was employed by Respond INC. It is in this period of her life that Doris and Chuck enjoyed a thriving business with their crafts lovingly named WoodChuck Crafts. Chuck worked his magic with the wood and Doris brought them to life with her painting. Doris was a faithful Christian who enjoyed studying the Bible. She loved planning and planting her gardens. Doris expressed her passion for quilting in her t-shirt quilts that she lovingly crafted for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as memory quilts for friends. Our family will miss her everyday and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. In her later years, Doris was hard-of-hearing and would often say, “say it again”. Well mom, here it is one more time, we love you and will miss you everyday, and your memory will live on.

Doris’ family invites you to join them at her memorial service which will be at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, 212 East Justis Street Newport, DE 19804, on Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 2:30 - 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Newark Senior Center Newark, DE. They mainly offer assistance to senior citizen homeowners to keep their homes safe. Doris also had a long-standing relationship with them where she provided hand-sewn items for their community members in their gift shop. All donations can be payable by mail and delivered to the following address: 200 Whitechapel Dr., Newark, DE 19713. This would be a wonderful way to honor her servant’s heart.
