Obituary for Donald A. McGarry

Donald A. McGarry, age 80, passed away peacefully early in the morning of Monday Jan 8th after a long, courageous 4 year battle with cancer.

Born in the year 1943 to James A. McGarry Jr and Mildred Muller, Donald grew up in the neighborhood of Edgemoor Gardens in Wilmington Delaware during a time where your parents kicked you out of the door in the morning and told you not to come back home until dinner time. He was a standout football player for Salesianum Highschool from 1960 to 1962. Donald’s teammates and coaching staff knew him as dependable with great hands which is why he was used not only as a Defensive Back but also an Offensive Tight End and a Punt Returner on Special Teams.

He would later serve in the Delaware National Guard before finding his career as an R&D Technician for the DuPont Edgemoor Plant from 1969 to 2001. People who knew Donald throughout his entire life all shared a common story…he had a warm caring personality, great sense of humor and always focused on the best qualities in people. Donald enjoyed fishing, walking his dogs, watching Westerns, Carpentry Work, traveling to the Beaches in Southern Delaware with his wife Kathleen and watching Eagles games with his son Donald Jr…(always sure to turn down the volume on the TV and tune in Merrill Reese on the radio).

He is survived by his cherished wife of 46 years Kathleen McGarry, son Donald McGarry Jr, brothers Martin McGarry and James McGarry the third (Eileen) Brother in Law Michael Kelly, sister Louise Armstrong and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Donald is predeceased by two younger sisters Molly Kelly and Anne Coyle and goddaughter Leslie Ann Baker.

Kathleen and Donald Jr would like to thank neighbors for their warm wishes these past four years and Health Care Staff too many to mention for their hard work and dedication.

The Family will be having a private memorial luncheon for Donald.

In lieu of flowers, Kathleen and D.J. encourage donations to Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute, thank you.
